1) Edge/cloud deep learning systems for industrial applications; 2) Real-time 3D view synthesis using Neural Radiance Field models
Job description
Imec-IPI is seeking a highly motivated and talented PhD Student to join our research team and to work in the field of Optimization and Adaptation of Deep Learning Systems to Edge and Cloud for Industrial Applications. This research opportunity is based on the urgent need for enhancing the efficiency and scalability of edge AI solutions in the industrial sector. You will be offered an initial contract of 12 months, to be extended up to a period of 4 years in total with the aim of obtaining a PhD. The research will be partly fundamental (furthering the state of the art) and partly applied. You will collaborate with international industrial partners while embedded in a university research team that is internationally recognized for its extensive expertise regarding sensor fusion for autonomous driving, traffic monitoring and industrial safety.
The Image Processing and Interpretation (IPI) group at Ghent University-imec consists of +/- 40 experienced researchers, post-docs and professors.
Job description
Imec-IPI is looking for a qualified and motivated PhD student to work on Real-time 3D view synthesis methods and neural radiance field-based models. As a PhD student with IPI, you will be located at the TELIN offices at Campus UFO in Ghent.
IPI conducts research in a wide array of both fundamental and applied image processing topics.
IPI currently has 1 vacancy: a senior researcher position
Imec-IPI is looking for a qualified and motivated senior researcher to work on sensor fusion and active vision.
As a (post-doctoral) researcher with IPI, you will be located at the TELIN offices at Campus UFO in Ghent. You will be offered a contract of indefinite duration at imec, after an initial trial period. The research will focus on developing new fundamental concepts for sensor fusion and active sensing and demonstrating in industrially relevant applications (TRL6). You will collaborate with international industrial partners while embedded in a university research team that is internationally recognized for its extensive expertise regarding sensor fusion for autonomous driving, traffic monitoring and industrial safety. The longer-term perspectives include growing into a role of research supervisor, helping to attract new projects, or remaining active in technical research.
The Image Processing and Interpretation (IPI) group at Ghent University-imec consists of +/- 40 experienced researchers, post-docs and professors. IPI conducts research in a wide array of both fundamental and applied image processing topics.
As of May 2023, we have no open PhD vacancies. New vacancies will appear periodically, so please check back later.

Research topics Part of the research in our research group is financed by collaborative projects with companies and other research groups. Many of the possible doctoral subjects are therefore related to one of these projects.
On the other hand, researchers can also be funded by personal scholarships (funded by FWO, IWT or UGent), which are awarded on the basis of research proposals that do not necessarily tie in with existing projects.
At the moment we are conducting research in IPI in the following application areas:
Autonomous vehicles UAVs/Drones Remote sensing (hyperspectral imaging) Agriculture and industrial inspection Improvement of multimedia consumer products Energy-efficient computing Medical applications (MRI, CT, dermatology), biological applications (e.g. plant growth, microscopy) In our research group, there is room for both fundamental theoretical research, where the emphasis is mainly on new techniques, and application-oriented research, where the emphasis is mainly on results and practical applicability.

Momenteel verrichten we in IPI o.a. onderzoek over de volgende toepassingen:
