Prof. Aleksandra Pizurica was awarded the 2013-2014 "de Boelpaepe" prize from the Académie royale de Belgique.

Prof. Pizurica has been awarded the 44th "de Boelpaepe" prize. The "de Boelpaepe" prize been awarded on a bi-annual basis since 1926 by the Académie royale des sciences, des lettres et des beaux-arts de Belgique (Royal Academy of Science, Letters and Fine Arts of Belgium). It rewards scientific contributions in photography and imaging. The award ceremony is scheduled for Monday, December 14th 2015, at 16h00.

Wenzhi Liao et. al. won the "Best Paper Challenge” of the 2014 IEEE GRSS Data Fusion Contest

Wenzhi Liao et. al. from Ghent University is the winner of the Paper Contest of the 2014 IEEE GRSS Data Fusion Contest, "Fusion of thermal infrared hyperspectral and VIS RGB data using guided filtering and supervised fusion graph". The Paper Contest of the 2014 Data Fusion Contest, organized by the Image Analysis and Data Fusion (IADF) Technical Committee of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society was opened on February 19, 2014. The submission deadline was June 15, 2014. Participants submitted open-topic manuscripts using the data released for the Contest.

Colleague Wenzhi Liao et. al. win Best Paper Challenge” of the 2013 IEEE GRSS Data Fusion Contest

Approximately 30 teams worldwide entered the “Best Paper Challenge” of the 2013 IEEE GRSS Data Fusion Contest with innovative approaches to analyze hyperspectral and LiDAR data. The top-ten results, ranked based on the cumulative scores from a double blind peer-review process are summarized below along with a brief description of the algorithms and the contact information of the authors.

Asli Kumcu won Best Study Presentation on the first Qualinet Summer School on Quality Assessment for Ph.D. students

Adriaan Barri, Petr Dostal, Lukas Krasula, and Asli Kumcu won Best Study Presentation for their open-lab day work supervised by prof. Patrick Le Callet, on "Bias in the the variance of subjective scores due to the rating scale," at the first Qualinet Summer School on Quality Assessment for Ph.D. students and researchers. The summer school was held 12-17 August 2012 in Ilmenau, Germany and organised by QUALINET, Ilmenau University of Technology, and Fraunhofer IDMT.

Sebastian Gruenwedel received best paper award at ICDSC 2012

Sebastian Gruenwedel received the best paper award for the paper "A Best View Selection in Meetings through Attention Analysis Using a Multi-camera Network" at the 6th ACM/IEEE International Conference on Distributed Smart Cameras (ICDSC 2012), which was held in Hong Kong, China.

Bart Goossens wins IBM Belgium Award for Computer Science 2011

On December 13 2011, our colleague dr. ir. Bart Goossens won the IBM Belgium Award for Computer Science 2011. This award is given by the Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek in Vlaanderen (FWO) and le Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique (FNRS). Both representatives from the academic world and the company IBM were present at the award ceremony.

Maarten Slembrouck wins the "Barco High Tech Award 2011"

Maarten Slembrouck wins the "Barco High Tech Award 2011" with his master thesis about how to operate computers with hand gestures. Maarten graduated this year as Master of Science in Industrial Sciences (industrieel ingenieur) elektronics at the HoGent. The award was given at the Filmfestival Gent. Currently, he works there as scientific assistant.

Barco/FWO award for TELIN thesis student Kevin Anckaert

Kevin Anckaert (MSc. thesis student at TELIN-IPI-IBBT in 2010-2011) has received the BARCO/FWO award for master theses 2011 with his work entitled "joint noise reduction and demosaicing for the reconstruction of digital camera images". The award ceremony took place in Ghent on Oct. 14, 2011 during Film Festival Ghent.

Sebastian Gruenwedel won 2nd prize in the PhD forum Awards ICDSC 2011

In the last edition of the International Conference on Distributed Smart Cameras (ICDSC 2011) held in August 2011 in Het Pand in Gent, Belgium, our colleague Sebastian Gruenwedel won the 2nd prize in the Best PhD forum Awards with his poster and abstract titled "Multi-view occupancy maps using a network of low resolution visual sensors".

Jan Aelterman behaalde presentatieprijs op het 11de PhD symposium van de Faculteit Ingenieurswetenschappen

Op 1 december ging het 11de doctoraatssymposium door van de Faculteit Ingenieurswetenschappen van de Universiteit Gent. Daar kregen beginnende (< 2 jaar) en gevorderde (> 2 jaar) doctoraatsstudenten de kans om hun werk te presenteren aan de hand van een poster. In elke categorie (beginnend - gevorderd) was er een winnaar en 2 laureaten. Bij de gevorderden was Jan Aelterman laureaat. Daarbij werd de ingestuurde abstract die hoort bij de poster eerst beoordeeld. Daarna werden de elektronisch ingestuurde posters beoordeeld.
